| Description: | In the distant future, a man appears who may be the prophet that a long-suffering galaxy has been waiting for. | Comments: | I have read the book. The book is great. I have seen the movie. It isn't. First of all, MacLachlan is far too old to be the main character Paul, the Guild is hardly even referred to when it should be in the foreground, the Emperor (Ferrer) is treated like a buffoon, all the Mentats are seen as drug addicts, Baron Harkonnen (McMillan) is overplayed WAY too badly to be seen as a threat, Sting just doesn't work out at all, the sets are too bland, the effects are a joke, the script doesn't just edit out parts of the book - it takes a machete to it and cuts out whole chunks that leave the rest unintelligible and Lynch's direction tries to ape Kubrick but comes up sadly short. This is such a missed opportunity that it makes me sick to think about it. How can any fan of Herbert or the "Dune" saga seriously think this is worth anything more than skeet-shooting fodder? I'd rather drink a pitcher full of the Water of Life than sit through this mess again. No stars. It isn't worth discussing anymore. Just feed all existing prints of "Dune" to a sand worm, someone - ANYONE. |
